    Dance Categories

    Hip Hop

Time Limit: 2 min 30 sec

A Hip Hop routine is composed of street style movements with an emphasis on variety, execution, creativity, body isolations/control, rhythm, uniformity and musical interpretation. Choreography should demonstrate various styles and elements of hip hop while incorporating athleticism, footwork, jumps, stalls, etc. Routine should highlight movement styles rooted in hip hop culture. Purposeful skills may be included to enhance the performance and complement the overall style and intent of the routine.

    Pom

Time Limit: 2 min 30 sec

A Pom routine is defined by a strong, consistent pom-based movement that is clean, sharp, and precise in execution. Emphasis is placed on visual impact, team synchronization, and overall clarity of motions. Routine may incorporate technical skills such as leaps, turns, jumps, and kicklines. Poms should be actively and effectively used throughout the routine, as their presence and utilization contribute significantly to the judges’ overall impression.

    Jazz

Time Limit: 2 min 30 sec

Jazz is a versatile and expressive category that can incorporate a wide range of styles, including traditional, commercial, funk, and musical theater. Movement may be sharp, dynamic, and powerful, or fluid and soft, with intentional use of musicality throughout. Emphasis is placed on style, control, technical skills, alignment, and overall performance quality and communication.

    Lyrical

Purposeful elements and technical skills may be incorporated to enhance the overall artistry of the routine.

    Theme

Time Limit: 2 min 30 sec

The focus of this performance is audience entertainment. With no spoken word by the athlete, this routine develops a selected theme or era through music, costuming, dance choreography and/or props. This routine should encompass and express one predominant theme and/or era. A proper theme dance should incorporate creative and innovative movements and dance choreography that help shape the intended theme. Athletic and technical skills will be credited toward the degree of difficulty. Costuming is required to reflect the routine’s theme/era. Props are HIGHLY recommended and should be utilized throughout the routine to maximize score.

    Variety

Time Limit: 2 min 30 sec

A Variety routine is an open category for creative freedom and the fusion of multiple dance styles, performance elements, and thematic concepts. Routines may incorporate genres such as jazz, hip hop, pom, lyrical, kick, contemporary, majorette, or other movement forms. Emphasis is placed on originality, creativity, and the seamless integration of styles and ideas.
